Discover the advantages of using Markup in JAMstack

Felipe SilbersteinAugust 30, 2021

Those who know JAMstack understand that it is not enough to use keywords to get a better position in search engines; your entire site must be prepared to respond as soon as possible.

For this, static content is ideal; you get a faster load of relevant content and thus deliver quality responses to search engines.

Looking for a new platform? Think of a JAMstack Commerce

The e-commerce market has been the great revelation of 2020. In the United States, from the customer side, there is an increase in the average ticket of purchases made via an electronic device, comparing the quarterly values of 2020 and 2021. From another perspective, residents of the United States today spend up to a third more than last year.

From the business side, it is estimated that by 2025, profits will increase more than 20% in retail e-commerce compared to 2020 in the United States. Therefore, companies have not ceased perfecting their digital sales channels, which also implies that the number of available sites increases everyday and competition with it.

If you are suffering from the classic problems of a platform that does not fit your business model, then it is unlikely that you will be able to stand out among all existing sites. A web development methodology can help you build a customized and highly flexible solution; JAMstack.

The "M" in JAMstack

Part of the success of the JAMstack methodology is explained by the advantage obtained from distributing the static pages (and their necessary elements) via CDN, which already have loaded each of the core files to the site.

Thus, when the user requests your content, they get it directly from the CDN cache. If it is not available, the Content Distribution Network itself will request it from the file repository and then deliver it directly to the user.

In addition, the loaded content will be ready and waiting for another user to request it without having to query the repository again, which fulfills its function as a remote server. In this way, your site will be progressively built as users require content or when the development team performs an update.

Why Markup? And what about markdown?

Each file contains markup language or Markup, which is indicative code that structures how each content should be handled within the site. There are various types of markup language, such as XML, XHTML, or HTML.

Frequently we all recognize *HTML ("HyperText Markup Language")* as the fundamental language of the web, which provides instructions on how to organize content or text; in a way, it is the first impression of the site to a visitor.

This markup language tells search engines how the content is displayed using the tags assigned (for example<head>), which is how we define - in advance - the distribution of the elements that make up the site.

Following this logic, all our content will be stored in source files such as markdown files hosted on cloud-based servers, for example, when using content managers with solutions such as Netlify or Contentful. In a way, Markup is the content, and markdown is the object that contains it.

Segment the load and keep the rest on standby

In JAMstack, content is not processed dynamically at the server level, overloading systems at times of high demand. Under this philosophy, the content is static and is pre-built, waiting in the cache of a CDN service, ready to be called.

  • When users access the site, they communicate with the CDN, responsible for delivering the content from the closest node to the user. And as mentioned above, when the request is for content that has not been preloaded, the same CDN undertakes to establish communication between the repository (for example, Contentful) and then deploys it on the client-side.
  • This deferred content loading feature is known as Distributed Persistent Rendering (DPR). It allows organizations to segment the loading of their sites, deliver the essentials first, and keep the rest on standby, which further lightens your sites' load.
    • So you can be available even for lower-speed connections. Gone will be the problems of unfinished loads or excessive waiting times when buying your products.

Markup is the basis of the superpowers of a JAMstack commerce

Are you getting us? In addition to providing you with a fast e-commerce, this development methodology uses the best of web technology to deliver a platform that grows with you. We can summarize it as follows:

  • Your site will be available even with low bandwidth, thanks to the deferred loading of static content. Even having hundreds of thousands of content files, you can still have an initial light load so that your clients can request the rest according to their preferences.
  • The CDN service will deliver your content from the node closest to the client, reducing the latency of the service. In addition, it will provide you with practically uninterrupted uptime without having to worry about server maintenance.
  • You can then enjoy the simplicity of the JAMstack backend, as it is not required to develop every feature of the site. This is part of the advantage of including services via APIs and their integration with the data, so the backend is simpler, and the probability of configuration errors is reduced.
  • Your content - lightweight - will be rendered by search engines, providing a quick response to the information they need in the structure they require.
    • At Reign, we are experts in using the JAMstack methodology for business digitalization; because we know that it improves the quality of the platforms and allows them to be visible to everyone. Do you want to remain "hidden" or get new opportunities?
